The Motor Caravanners Club Rally - Hole Park Rolvenden
The rally was only about half an hour, or so, away from home in Rolvenden in Kent.
We had never heard of Hole Park before and although we have gone through the village a few times we hadn't even noticed the brown tourist sign pointing off the main A28.
The Camper Max satnav had it though and so we blindly followed that as we neared the estate. We chose to ignore it at first as the route it wanted us to take initially wasn't that wide or well surfaced.
Then again, the A28 from Ashford was pretty awful in places. Not so much potholes as 4 feet by 2 feet areas an inch deep where the surface had gone AWOL.
On arrival we avoided the narrower entrance nearest the village and continued on to the one better signposted. The rally field was inside the entrance to the estate. There were a few vans there and we drew up next to the hosts van.
Once signed in we decided that as the field sloped a little we'd stay at the bottom alongside a large Carthago liner.
The was plenty of space and we left a gap of easily 10 metres.
We were almost level and so didn't need the levelling ramps.
It was an opportunity to get out the new awning mat again and the chairs. Although it was sunny and the front of the van was facing south, it was too windy for the roll out Dometic awning. I did have the wind tie downs with us but we didn't want to damage it flapping in the wind.
The afternoon was spent doing very little. We had walk to the house to see where you paid the entry fee and where the cafe could be located.
After dinner in the van everyone gathered around the fire pit to chat and chill out. I mean chill as well. The wind hadn't eased much.
We retired around ten and left the diehards to see the fire burn itself out.
Saturday we weren't up too early but in plenty of time to see one group walk into Rolvenden for a pub lunch and to visit the Morgan car museum.
We decided to do the gardens and estate as Reggie wouldn't like the walk into the village with no pavements.
We were given a Two-for-One ticket for the gardens and went down there. The plan was to have a coffee but the ticket seller intercepted us to pay before we get get into the cafe.
The map of the gardens seemed to be causing some confusion as we regularly passed the same people going in different directions.
The rhododendron are pretty spectacular.
Once we had exhausted the gardens we set off back to the van.
Saturday evening was the "sausage sizzle". Around the firepit with sausages cooked on the bbq and another chance to chat.
When it got too chilly we went back to the van to warm up and watch a bit of TV.
Sunday we didn't get up too early and after breakfast we did the housekeeping jobs. Luckily the elsan point wasn't too far away.
The drive home was pretty straightforward and most of the way we were followed by another van from the rally...
Where next? A Rally at Headcorn Airfield in July.
